Although, many watchmakers say that other complications, including a
"simple" chronograph (when it is properly designed), are much more
difficult to create from scratch than the tourbillon, for many
consecutive years the last one has been considered to be one of the
absolute pinnacles of Haute Horlogerie.
Anyway, the tourbillon has always been a mandatory part of the top-line
models produced by luxury watch brands, as well as innovative materials
and high-quality finishes.
Now another trend is coming, when some brands relieve its models of the
tourbillon, but leave other design elements that have actually made
these watches popular unchanged. This allows brands to expand the segment and offer their models to a wider audience. Richard Mille
, perhaps, can be considered one of the most successful brands that
began offering some of its best watches without a tourbillon, for
example, the Baby Nadal and Baby Bubba models.
The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Automatic Skeleton model may seem quite
familiar with the terms of external characteristics - to the untrained
eye this designer watch looks deceptively similar to an in-house model
with a tourbillon.
Despite this fact, the one who is more intimately acquainted with
little details and mechanisms of fine watchmaking will notice a key
difference immediately.
The tourbillon with its spinning cage located at the 8 o'clock position
has been replaced with the balance wheel hold by skeletonized bridges
and a mirror treated plate.
The RD820SQ mechanism consists of 167 parts, most of which have been
covered with gray rhodium to create already familiar to us dark
technical image, which has become accustomed thanks to suchlike Roger Dubuis fine watches.
The skeletonization also includes carved bridges, the most distinctive of which is the one located at the 4 o'clock position. Another one relatively rare and intriguing part of the watch design is the micro rotor set at the top left side of the dial. Photos do not convey how big a piece of metal it is made from. The
Roger Dubuis Excalibur Automatic Skeleton luxury watch is issued in 18
karat pink gold and has 42 mm in diameter, thereby making this model
more wearable than its famous "big brothers" from some collections
(several versions with tourbillon measure 45 mm in diameter). This piece of high-end watches will be presented at SIHH-2015. The retail price will be $83,200.
